It is with a very heavy heart I must share this news. My friend Izzy Foreal (Peter Knox) Is no longer with us
He went out on his morning run today and we assume his body must have sent him a message saying "That's enough!" Izzy had been working hard with this fitness regime. I remember thinking to myself when we stayed with Izzy & Lynne last year "Fuck! I don't think I could do that!" Izzy was a very generous musician who created many opportunities for his mates to perform. I played at jams he organised up North in Raleigh and he played at jams I organised down here in Sydney. I was looking forward to one day when we both might have more time to get up on stage together more often. Izzy and I had a very similar approach to performance. The musical aspect played second fiddle to the performance aspect.
I first heard of Izzy when he replaced my brother, Terry Wilkins, in 1969 in a band called Quill with Red McKelvie and Daryl McKenzie (which had evolved from the Starving Wild Dogs.) Some time later I saw a lot of him in the 69ers with Frances Butler. I was 18 and I loved their silliness and their hilarious style of smutty humour.
Frances went off and found Jesus and lost his sense of humour in the process but Izzy reinvented the 69ers as the Zarsoff Brothers featuring Terry Zarsoff, Shaggy Zarsoff, Bluey Zarsoff, Bernie Zarsoff, there were quite a few who passed through the band over the years.
My thoughts go out to Lynne Sanders-Braithwaite, Izzy's partner. We have no idea when there will be a ceremony but tonight at our Merton gig you can rest assured we will be singing a few songs for Izzy. Unfortunately no longer a living legend.
